The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Gary Herling can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence: Gary was a great friend with a big heart. We got to know each other when I was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, from 1993 to 1996. Gary believed in me, and always thought I was doing important physics, though it was a completely new field without a name yet (now called quantum information theory) -- that helped me get through the many moments of self-doubt. Gary loved his nieces and talked about them often. In 1999 when I was working in Los Alamos, Gary drove up for a visit to see my wife and me and our one-year-old daughter Emma. Gary and I took Emma out for a walk in her carriage, and at some point she looked up at him and smiled. Gary became so happy. He would say, over and over, "She smiled at me. She smiled at me." In my last email from Gary in 2007, he still wrote, "I remember ... that your older daughter ... smiled for me when I visited Los Alamos." My family will always smile at the thought of Gary.

Condolence: Gary Herling was a good friend of my father's. He was very smart and very kind. I would like to have known him better. I remember well the time we had dinner at his house and he told us about the military strategies employed in WWII, or when he took my younger brother and I to see the new Star Wars. We will miss him.

Condolence: Gary Herling was an excellent physicist and a gentleman. After a sterling career at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, he became an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of New Mexico. Over 25 years, he did research with several of us and wrote many papers on lattice gauge theory, atomic physics, and medical physics. His high levels of intellect, politeness, humility, and activity were an example to us all, and we are better for his presence among us. We all will miss him as long as we are alive.
